Including the Excluded!Wednesday 13 April 2011 saw the start of our international workshop on 'Including the Excluded in Global Politics'.
The workshop brought together leading academics, activists and officials from around the world to explore how marginalised groups can be empowered in global affairs.
'A rainbow colour workshop. Keep the process going. Make it be known by the whole world.' |
The 3-day workshop, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, looked at an example of innovative practices from each of the 10 world regions.
These examples include a number of structurally disadvantaged groups, including Afro-descendant women in the Americas, Dalits in India, informal workers, peasants, sexual minorities, small island states and youth. The studies also evaluated various strategies to overcome marginalisation in global politics: e.g., to attract state sponsors of one’s cause and to invoke global human rights machinery.
The workshop generated lively debates and developed new understanding on how to identify and overcome exclusion. A summary of the workshop findings is available now together with video clips, daily updates, photos & biographies of participants. Further publications will be produced over the coming months.
'The workshop brought out interconnections between different movements and hopefully builds new collaborations.' |
'It's been one excellent learning experience.' |
'I appreciate being part of such an inclusive group committed to a process of building global democracy.' |
