What does it mean? Our Learning for Global Democracy (LGD) project looks at how can people learn about global issues and how they are governed. At present, people across the world generally have little knowledge about these matters and as such cannot actively engage with them. With few suitable learning opportunities in place, the public has little way of learning about global issues and their control. If people do not know how global matters are handled, how can they possibly get involved and have their say? In this sense, our right to self-determination is compromised. We need learning so that we can be active.
The Learning for Global Democracy (LGD) project explores many different ways that people can learn about global affairs. In addition to formal schooling, we consider the role of the media, the Internet, “popular universities” and theatre, amongst others. We examine how these mediums shape public learning about global matters. Case studies have been specially commissioned on such areas involving wide range of authors. These papers have been brought into open workshop discussion with a range of official and non-official persons who also work upon questions of public information and learning. By mixing up regions, cultures and specialisms across age groups and gender, the LGD project can bring a unique perspective on developing effective learning for more democratic global politics.
The LGD project aims to:
• raise attention to the challenges of creating effective learning for global democracy
• increase conceptual clarity about pedagogies for global democracy
• examine innovative initiatives in learning on global issues
• generate proposals to advance learning for global democracy
• enable researchers and practitioners to better address these challenges
• improve collaboration between academics and practitioners on these issues
• strengthen networks for the promotion of learning for global democracy
BGD has produced several publications on learning for global democracy.
