The Building Global Democracy (BGD) Programme aims to advance knowledge and action for greater public participation and control in the governance of global challenges.
To help build global democracy the BGD programme has the following main aims:
- to put issues of democratising global affairs on the political agenda
- to increase conceptual clarity about global democracy
- to record, assess and raise awareness of innovative efforts to further global democracy
- to develop informed and viable proposals to advance global democracy
- to enhance capacity for research and practice of global democracy
- to promote exchange between practitioners and researchers on global democracy
- to build networks for the furtherance of global democracy
To advance these aims the BGD programme through its projects produces the following:
- workshops on various aspects of building global democracy
- publications (policy briefs, toolkits, pamphlets, articles, books)
- a website in 8 languages and a Facebook page
- an online catalogue of 300 institutions and programmes working on global democracy
- an online library with over 600 publications concerning global democracy
- a database of persons interested in global democracy (currently 6,100 in 162 countries)
- a quarterly electronic newsletter on BGD and other work to advance global democracy
- public presentations of BGD work
- media coverage of BGD work
