Global Democracy is…
In order to broaden discussions of the nature and purpose of global democracy, the Building Global Democracy Programme convened an international workshop in Cairo, Egypt in December 2009. The workshop involved 40 participants from 29 countries around the world, as well as a number of local contributors from Egypt.
Specialist authors attending the workshop heralded from ten world regions and brought highly diverse perspectives to the issue of how global democracy itself could be conceived. These included Austronesian culture, Confucian philosophy, feminism, Gandhian views, Islam, postcolonialism, post-communist socialism, and western liberalism.
"A great mix. The strong presence of women was fantastic.""Useful, thought-provoking, intense. I feel more 'capacitated'!""Hope the Building Global Democracy programme can play an important role in the era of globalization." |
Key figures from official and civil society sectors around the world also attended the workshop. Their role was to question, debate, and discuss the concrete, global implications of the author's papers.
The workshop sparked lively debates and discussions as well as generating intellectually provocative new ideas about the meaning of global democracy.
