Xu Jiajun

Day 2 14 Jiajun and Shaista.JPG

XU Jiajun is co-author of 'Cooperative-Harmonious Global Democracy from the Perspective of Chinese Culture'.

XU Jiajun, author from East Asia, holds an M.Phil in International Development from the school of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University.

She is the author of Development as Institutional Innovation (Conference paper for World Civic Youth Forum, South Korea, 2009), A Quantitative Alternative in Assessing China’s Foreign Aid Behaviors: Africa as Case Study (Paper for International Conference on the New Thinking of China’s 21st Century Diplomat, Hong Kong, 2009), and On the Reform of International Monetary Cooperation System from the Perspective of International Political Economy (Honor Prize in the PhD Dissertation Forum, Shanghai, China, 2009).

Her research interests have focused on the interaction between culture and institution; arising from genuine concerns about disturbing facts in developing countries. Many underdeveloped countries have adopted, or been coerced to adopt, the "best" institutions or policies from developed countries aimed at economic growth and political accountability; however, it has often turned out to be counterproductive, or even harmful to the underdeveloped countries. The central issue, therefore, is how to promote real institutional innovation by combining "borrowed" institutions with local/national needs and cultures.

When asked about her aspirations for the Conceptualising Global Democracy workshop, Jiajun replied:

“It is my dream to become a truly free individual and at the same time bring freedom and happiness to those who are disadvantaged in this global world. Global democracy is ‘realistic Utopian’, for it strives for a more equal and just international political economic order through cross-cultural dialogue and pragmatic reforms. Hopefully this workshop will be a crucial step towards international democratic justice.”
