Participants from over 20 countries joined a group of BGD conveners to discuss “How to build Global Democracy?” The audience included parliamentarians, academics and representatives from NGOs and social movements willing to learn more, and effectively participate in the debate on democratisation of global governance.
The discussion brought up a number of themes that marked earlier BGD workshops in Belem, Cairo and Delhi: for example, the need to cater democracy to context; the importance of pursuing global democracy in local, national and regional sites as well as global venues per se; the interrelations of global democracy with other values such as justice and peace; etc. In addition, West African participants repeatedly underlined the need to address global migration questions in a democratic fashion.
The WSF also provided the perfect setting to launch the BGD toolkit on Conceptualising Global Democracy. The audience had the opportunity to go through it, discuss their own ideas about Global Democracy and/or lack of it, and compare their thoughts to those of other participants.
