Project 2: Citizen Learning for Global Democracy

To be democratically empowered, ‘the people’ must be conscious of and informed about the issues and processes at hand. A public that is not actively learning about its situation cannot pursue meaningful self-determination. What kinds of pedagogies are needed to provide this citizen empowerment for the governance of global affairs?

This project will explore a number of innovations in citizen learning on global affairs. Case studies will examine experiences such as school curricula on global affairs, global studies degrees in tertiary education, ‘popular universities’ for citizen activists, initiatives in mainstream and alternative mass media to foster global awareness, the development of public resource centres on global politics, and instances of effective public information outreach by the relevant governance agencies themselves. Examples of possible specific case studies on innovative global education include the Check Your Head programme in British Columbia schools, education programmes for social movement activists in Brazil, ActionAid’s Financing Education Initiative in Africa, the International Student Festival in Trondheim, Prachadharm News Net in Thailand, and the RITIMO network of citizen information centres in France.

It is intended that the workshop for this project be held in New Delhi in January 2010 and the book launch in Canada.
