The Building Global Democracy programme organises most of its activities around projects. Each project examines a key challenge in generating greater ‘rule by and for the people’ in the governance of global affairs. 

The five main projects in the BGD programme address, respectively:

• Conceptualising Global Democracy
• Citizen Learning for Global Democracy
• Including the Excluded in Global Policymaking
• Structural Redistribution for Global Democracy
• Intercultural Constructions of Global Democracy

In addition, a pilot project on Civil Society and Accountable Global Governance has been conducted in 2006-2009 inter alia to develop, test and refine the BGD methodology.

Each project brings together specialist researchers on the topic at hand from ten world regions. These academic authors are joined by civil society actors and officials who work in the subject areas of the research. The convening group participates in all five projects to promote an integration of the individual projects within the Building Global Democracy programme as a whole. 

Each project involves a workshop, a variety of publications, public presentations, and periodic updates communicated globally through the Building Global Democracy programme's emailing list.
