Our Objectives

The Building Global Democracy Programme aims to advance knowledge and action for greater public participation and control in the governance of global challenges.

Within this overall goal more specific BGD programme objectives are:
  • to increase attention to problems of global democracy
  • to elaborate and clarify notions of democracy in respect of global affairs
  • to record and assess past efforts to advance democracy in global relations
  • to contribute viable ideas for a democratization of global affairs
  • to advance capacities to promote democracy in global politics
  • to foster practitioner-researcher exchange on issues of global democracy
  • to further advocacy networks for democratizations of global governance.

As these seven core aims and the programme title indicate, the driving motivation of the Building Global Democracy initiative is ‘to build’. To be sure, the work is motivated by critiques of pervasive and deep democratic failings in current governance of global affairs. However, the programme emphasis is to go beyond critique to creativity, using diagnoses of current ills to inspire broad visions and specific proposals for the furtherance of global democracy.
