Mike Muchilwa

Mike Muchilwa, co-discussant of the IFAT study, is is currently the Monitoring Coordinator of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT), where he is charged with overseeing the implementation of fair trade standards by 300 organizations spread over 70 countries. He has spearheaded the development of organizations such as the Kenya Federation of Alternative Trade (KEFAT) and the Confederation of Fair Trade in Africa (COFTA). Mike also serves inter alia as a Board Director of a coast-based human rights NGO and Chair of the Kenya Association of Fundraising Professionals. Prior to joining IFAT, he was the Managing Director of KICK, a leading business development provider in Kenya. As a consultant, he has been involved in projects financed by DFID, GEF/UNDP, UNEP, EU-MESP, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, USAID, UNCDF and UNDP. Mike has also managed a 600-acre farm, being a tree farmer himself. He is currently also engaged in promoting new business opportunities for small agricultural producers. Muchilwa holds a degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi and has written a book entitled The Job of Getting a Job. He will be publishing a second book on Running a Business Besides Your Job.
