João Pacheco de Oliveira, co-author of ‘Including Indigenous Peoples in Global Politics’ João Pacheco de Oliveira is a Brazilian anthropologist who teaches at the National Museum (UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro) since 1997. His research on the Tikunas (Indigenous community in the upper Amazon), resulted in his dissertation (UNB, 1977) and his doctoral thesis (PPGAS, 1986), the latter published in 1988.
Along with Indigenous leaders was one of the founders of 'Maguta': Centre for Documentation and Research of the upper Amazon, and the 'Maguta Museum', administered directly by the indigenous movement, through the General Council of the Tikuna tribe. He has also conducted policy research, coordinating a project on monitoring of indigenous lands in Brazil (1986-1994), in collaboration with leading indigenous organizations. He was president of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (1994/1996) and Coordinator of the National Committee on Indigenous Affairs.
In recent years Dr. Pacheco has been devoted to the study of issues related to anthropology of colonialism and historical anthropology. He is curator of the ethnological collections of the National Museum and recently organized the exhibition ‘The First Brazilians’, about indigenous communities in the northeast of Brazil. This exhibition was visited by over 150,000 people in Recife, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro.
