Epsy Campbell-Barr

Epsy Campbell-Barr is author of ‘Including Afro-Descendant Women in Global Politics’  

Epsy Campbell-Barr is a Costa Rican politician and economist with a Masters Degree in Cooperation for Development. She founded the Women's Forum for Central American Integration and coordinated the organization during the period 1996-2001.

She was also Coordinator for The Network of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Women from 1996 to 2001. She was President of the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) in February 2005 to February 2009. National MP for the PAC in the period 2002-2006, and head of the party from 2003 to 2005. In the elections of 2006 she was a candidate for the vice-presidency and in 2009 was a presidential candidate.

Epsy currently serves as Executive Director of the Center for Women and Chairwoman of the Working Group on People of African Descent in the Americas and the Caribbean. Epsy has also participated as International speaker at universities and seminars organized by intergovernmental and multilateral organizations, public and electoral institutions as well as political parties all across America and the Caribbean.

She has published books and articles on democracy and inclusion, political and economic participation of women, people of African descent, sexism and racism among others. She is an expert in social development issues, political participation of women of African descent and equality.

International workshop in Rio de Janeiro

The workshop brought together academics, activitists and policymakers from around the world and generated lively debates and new understanding on how to understand and overcome exclusion.
