Citizen Learning for Global Democracy

What does it mean?

Our Citizen Learning for Global Democracy (CLGD) project looks at how can people learn about global issues and how they are governed. At present, people across the world generally have little knowledge about these matters and as such cannot properly engage with them. With very few educational structures in place in the everyday world, the public has no natural way of learning about global issues and their control. If you don’t know how global groups are governed, how can you possibly get involved in what they do? In this sense, our right to self-determination is nullified. We need to be educated so that we can be active.

How are we going to do it?

The Citizen Learning for Global Democracy (CLGD) project will explore many different ways in which people can learn about global affairs. We will look at the role of the media, the internet, “popular universities” and theatre amongst others. We will examine the way these mediums shape public learning about global matters. Papers have been specially commissioned on such areas and a wide range of authors are taking part. We will bring these papers into open workshop discussion with a range of official and non-official persons who also work upon questions of public information and learning. By mixing up regions, specialisms and gender, we hope to gain a unique perspective on how we can really begin to develop citizen learning.

What will the project achieve?

This project aims to:

• increase attention to the educational challenges of creating effective citizen learning for global democracy
• advance theories and methods for this type of learning
• explore and examine several innovative initiatives which already work on citizen learning
• put forward proposals for wider and more effective methods for this learning
• enable researchers and practitioners to better address these challenges
• improve understanding and collaboration between academics and practitioners on this matter
• contribute to the growth of citizen learning global networks.

How will the findings be shared?

The workshop will be held in New Delhi on 1-3 September 2010. Following this a statement of overall findings and suggestions from the workshop together with summaries of the case studies will be published on our website. The full studies will be published in book form. Various presentations will also take place including a public presenation to be held in Delhi.
