An initial public presentation of BGD'sConceptualising Global Democracy project took place at Cairo University on 9 December 2009. A panel of leading thinkers from around the world addressed the question: "Can There Be Global Democracy?"
What does it mean?The project on Civil Society and Accountable Global Governance (CS-AGG) was launched in mid-2006 as a trial run for the Building Global Democracy programme.
The project starts with the observation that one of the major shortfalls in contemporary democracy arises when global governance institutions fail adequately to answer to the people whose lives they affect.
The Building Global Democracy programme organises most of its activities around projects. Each project examines a key challenge in generating greater ‘rule by and for the people’ in the governance of global affairs.
The five main projects in the BGD programme address, respectively:
