Open seminar held on global issues

On 12th November Egality and Building Global Democracy presented an open seminar on global issues.

Who decides how we combat global poverty?
Who decides how we address climate change?
Who decides when war is legal?
Who decides when migration is a crime?
Who decides what is a human right?

We're a group of individuals from different countries and backgrounds who want to democratise the power behind these decisions. We've started an organisation, Egality (egalitynow.org), that is looking at ways to creatively change our thinking in this area.

Our first project VoteWorld (voteworld.org), is looking to get people across Africa 'voting' in the 2010 UK general election.

These voters will set the agenda, ask the questions and ultimately decide who to vote for.

On 12th November we held an open seminar at the University of Warwick to engage with other people (across the academic and non-academic spectrum) who feel strongly about issues of poverty, environment, conflict, migration and human rights - and how we solve them. The discussion was held at Warwick University, United Kingdom in Social Studies room S1.50 in the Politics and International Studies Department at 18:00 (6pm).

Everyone was welcome to join us for an open discussion following a short presentation on the VoteWorld project and our other plans in the pipeline. Professor Jan Aart Scholte, PAIS, also gave a short talk on the work of the Building Global Democracy Programme and how such activist groups as Egality fit into the work of this project.
